Adobe Systems Inc. experienced a data breach involving approximately 2.9 million customer records and source code.

The Chief Security Officer of Adobe issued a statement on the company’s blog advising that the attackers accessed customer IDs and encrypted passwords, and removed from the system information relating to 2.9 million customers, including name, encrypted credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, and information relating to customer orders. Adobe does not believe any non-encrypted data was removed from its system.

Adobe is working with authorities. It will reset affected passwords, and customers whose data was accessed with receive notification. Banks that process customer payments for Adobe were also notified in order to work with payment card companies to protect customers’ accounts.

This latest security incident shows the vulnerability of electronic information and confirms the importance of keeping information encrypted to lessen the impact of security incidents.
