Importance of Mobile Device Policies

IPads, iPhones, BlackBerrys, PDAs, smartphones, notebooks- With employees always on the go, employers should think about implementing and enforcing mobile device policies. Having a mobile device policy in place is an important step in preparing for the risks inherent in using such technology.

Mobile devices have the capacity to store substantial amounts of data. In many cases, employers do not own the devices employees are using remotely. Therefore, a policy is necessary to apply to anyone who has the capacity to access company data to ensure the integrity of employer information.

The policy may wish to address, at the outset, those devices the employer will support. Organizations may wish to limit access to work information to only certain employees with a need to have data access off the worksite. The policy should clearly address processes and procedures in the event of a theft of a mobile device, while giving the employer the right to detect and remotely wipe data. Password enforcement and encryption policies should apply to the mobile access.

Employers should periodically address their HR and Benefits procedures to make sure technology advances are addressed and monitored.
