Soon after several Twitter accounts were hacked, with the hackers releasing unauthorized tweets, Twitter has stepped up its account login verification process.
The new two-factor authentication process is an optional security protocol that requires the user to enter a verified telephone number and email address. Both Google and Facebook have offered two factor verification since 2011.
Twitter’s verification procedure is an optional process that the user can select through the security features in the Settings page. To participate, the user enters a cell phone number to be associated with the account. Then at each login to the Twitter account, a verification code is sent to the phone number. The user must enter the verification code at login to gain access to the account.
These steps are being offered as a method of deterring hackers from accessing Twitter accounts.
