Banks Face Cyber-Attacks

In the past few weeks, various banks have been the subject of cyber-attacks purportedly linked to Iran. Iran has responded by confirming that it respects international law and refrains from targeting other nations' economic or financial institutions.

Large banks, including PNC, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America, have experienced difficulties with respect to online banking services. In an apology to its customers, PNC Bank issued a press release recognizing access problems. PNC Bank identified difficulties accessing the online banking system, and attributed the inability to log in into the banking website to a specific cyber-attack known as a Denial of Service attack.

A Denial of Service attack is started by a malicious user or group of users directed at a particular website. These attacks prevent legitimate users from sending or receiving information. Typically, users will experience slowness in navigation, inability to log into secure web portals, or complete crash of the website.

Denial of Service attacks are usually targeted to large corporations where the attack can be very visible to many users, since the goal of the attack is to cause as much disruption as possible.

BAS would not be a desirable target for a Denial of Service attack, but BAS recognizes the importance of preparing for potential security issues. BAS utilizes the elite Tripwire monitoring system and has a dedicated professional analyzing BAS website traffic. This attention to security detail provides BAS the ability to identify and prevent any suspicious website activities in real time to keep systems secure.
