Several government agencies have banded together to release a joint ransomware statement. Ransomware is a malicious software that is used to deny access to a computer system or data until a ransom is paid. Ransomware infects a system through phishing emails or by visiting an infected website.
The agencies suggest the following actions to build resilience against ransomware.
- Back up systems, now and daily. All critical systems should be backed up on a separate device with the backups stored offline.
- Reinforce cybersecurity awareness and education. Provide employee training on recognizing cyber threats, phishing emails and suspicious links.
- Review cyber incident response plans. Have a clear method to approach attacks if they occur.
