The Federal Trade Commission issued a new alert on Preventing and Responding to Identity Theft. The FTC partnered with the Internal Revenue Service to allow people to report tax-related identity theft online, through the website www.identitytheft.gov. The website may be accessed by clicking here.

The website first asks for information about what happened. The user is asked to relay as much information as possible about the identity theft. Then, the FTC/IRS puts together a personal recovery plan which is shared with the user. Finally, the user is instructed on how to put the plan into action.

Tax-related identity theft occurs when someone uses a stolen Social Security Number to file a tax return and claim a refund. Most times, people discover the theft when they try to file an online tax return and the return is rejected for already being filed.

Taxpayers may now use the IRS/FTC website to file an IRS identity theft affidavit to start the IRS resolution of the issue.
