The Federal Trade Commission recently issued a staff report entitled Internet of Things: Privacy and Security in a Connected World. The report provides suggestions to keep consumers’ information private and secure.

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the ability of everyday objects to connect to the Internet and to send and receive data. It includes items such as cameras that post online automatically, home systems that allow people to remotely control lights and televisions, and fit/fuel personal bracelets that allow sharing of exercise accomplishments. IoT poses many potential security risks that could harm consumers, including (1) unauthorized access and misuse of personal information; (2) facilitating attacks on other systems; and (3) risks to personal safety.

The report encourages IoT companies to build security into their devices at the outset and limit the data they create and maintain. Devices should also offer consumer choice about data collection when practicable.

The report provides suggestions and analysis that may be applicable to many devices. A copy of the report can be found here
